Haydn’s Story

Haydn’s family visited Ben's Retreat in May 2024.

Here is Haydn’s journey, with lots of wildlife Im sure he will have a lovely break 💕

Haydn was 12 years old and fell ill with what we thought was a virus on a Sunday at the end of March 2023. He had a high fever and headache for around 24 hours.

He stared to feel better but over the next couple of weeks became increasingly tired and short of breath. He couldn’t walk up the stairs without having to stop for breath and also started to look really pale, almost white.

We took him to his GP where mum Lisa works as a healthcare assistant. GP was fabulous and contacted Royal United Hospital Children’s Ward who said to come in that day. Bloods were taken on arrival and unfortunately results showed that Haydn has Acute Lymphoblastic Leukamia.

His red blood cells were so low that he had to have a blood transfusion there and then he was transferred to Bristol Children’s Hospital where bone marrow tests were taken to confirm the subtype of leukaemia and start intense chemotherapy.

Unfortunately Haydn had severe rare reactions to the chemotherapy and had an extended hospital stay when transferred back to Bath. He coped amazingly considering he is also autistic and had to have a gastrostomy tube inserted into his stomach so he is able to take his medication. Haydn became so weak he had to use a wheelchair.

Haydn is now a year into the two year treatment. He is on maintenance chemotherapy which has to be taken every day. He is happy and doing well. He has bloods taken every week to ensure the chemotherapy is working.

Haydn loves wildlife and wildlife photography. He plays on his PlayStation online with his friends and loves a family board game night!
Haydn wouldn’t be getting through this without his family and friends support.
Haydn is really looking forward to his few days away in the Cotswolds, and is very grateful for the kindness of your foundation for arranging for us to stay.
