Phoebe's Story
Phoebe's family visited the Lodge in August 2024.
Phoebe was in her first term at Bath College when she went for bloods at the Drs as she had been suffering from fatigue and headaches for over 6 months.
We had a call the same day to same her bloods were all out of range and that she was anemic, if she gets a temperature to go straight to ED. This was the beginning of the nightmare.
Two days later Phoebe is at Bristol Children’s Oncology having more tests this is the first time we hear the word leukaemia.😞following a Bone marrow aspirate we were given the devastating news that Phoebe had myeloid dysplastic syndrome also known as a smouldering leukaemia.
Her leukaemia was chemo resistant and the only chance of a cure was a Bone Marrow Transplant, a young male German doner was found who we are forever grateful for.
Phoebes transplant was February 2020, we went into lockdown a week later.
The transplant was brutal and heartbreaking to watch our beautiful girl so unwell. But Phoebe dealt with it like she did everything with humour and courage. She was very loved by everyone on the wards and pleasure to look after.
After many complications , GVHD, Sepsis, E Coli, Shingles VOD, TMA… Phoebe began to turn a corner and life started to feel a little more normal.
Sadly just after Phoebes 18th birthday we had the devastating news Phoebe had relapsed and there was nothing more they could do.
Phoebe didn’t want to know how long she had left but she decided she did want to take part in a phase 1 clinical trial in Oxford, she knew this wouldn’t be a cure for her but her words ‘ if it can help someone else’s. Unfortunately Phoebe become to unwell and she had to stop the trial.
Phoebe passed away peacefully at home on 22nd December, surrounded by her family, boyfriend and beloved sausage dogs💔
Thank you to Bens foundation for this break away 💕
